Little Port Douglas

I was sad to leave my lovely little Cairns hostel, but knew I would return after my two night stint in Port Douglas. It was an hour drive north up to Port Douglas, which is a cute little beach town. There is one main road with lots of coffee shops, restaurants etc. The main reason I wanted to come up here was because Cairns doesn’t have a natural beach (they have a man-made lagoon), and my Uncle Kenny suggested I go there, as this is where his family vacations. There are lots of beautiful resorts, as it’s a higher end sort of town. But there are also a few hostels, which turned out to be full of people working here or trying to find work. My hostel (Dougies), was 95% backpackers who had been here for several weeks or days, working in restaurants, hotels etc. This created a completely different vibe from the hostel I had in Cairns where everyone was more or less passing through. I spent most of my time walking around the small town, dipping into shops, and laying on the beach. It is a 4 mile beach (I think), and one day I walked about an hour down the beach towards a group of kite surfers. I have seen kite surfers before but never been so close to watch their jumps and fails. Between the entertainment from the surfers and reading my book, I’d say I had a pretty solid day on the beach. I returned to Cairns for one night, had my first ‘goon’ (Sam-you were right, it’s not so bad!), and left the next morning for Darwin.
